Dancing with wolves is better than sleeping with them.
Does that make any sense? Well it does if you know the how it is referenced. There are often things that are said in life that you will not understand unless you are in on the whole conversation or know the regional dialect. This particularly the case with everyday living here in the south.
My aunt taught me the saying, “The devil is beating his wife with the frying pan.” The first time I said this to my wife she had no idea what I was talking about. At the time I said that phrase it was raining and the sun was shining. Hence the frying pan is the clouds, stove fire is the sun, and the rain is the devil’s wife’s tears. Now I not sure who came up with that saying or when it was first said, but I bet some people had the same look of bewilderment that was on my wife’s face the first time it was said.
This leads me into what I wanted to talk about. I want people know that just because you don’t understand what someone is saying does not mean that it is not valid. I see a lot of people that get angry if you don’t want to conform to the mainstream way of thinking. If you have an independent mind it is not a bad thing. Some of the bright people history has known often thought outside-of-the-box and their brilliance is only realized months and years after the fact.
Now I’m not saying that the person that who thought up the frying pan saying is a genius. I am saying that once you break down the meaning of the phrase it seems very artistic in nature. It is not be the loveliest picture because it talking about domestic violence. It is a good example of creativity that may get misconstrued for backwoods ignorance, but now that you know the real meaning who is really ignorant?
Dancing with wolves is better than sleeping with them.
We are well in to spring and the weather has been very nice if you like to do outdoor stuff. I thought in this week’s installment of List Wednesday I would talk about the Activities that I have done and planning to do.
Have done:
1. Flag Football Tournament in Destin. Every year the city of Destin puts on 2 of these tournaments. It is a good event. It normal has about 10 teams and they are all very good.
2. Secretary’s Challenge. This was the first this event happened and I am glad that I was able to be a part of it. I am looking forward to the next one.
3. Lee’s Place 5k. Although I froze my but off, this was a good run. My wife likes to make fun of the course because you pass the finish line 3 time before the 4th and final time to complete the race.
4. Palace Saloon 5k. Fun race and a ton of people. Around mile 2 you go up a ½ mile long incline and then it is all down hill to the finish line. Super fast finish. I had to catch my self from running too fast down hill because I was scared that I might trip over my own feet.
5. Fudpuckers Beach Volleyball Tournament. Absolutely a great tournament. This was the first time I played in the tournament and it was great. Really good people and a fun atmosphere.
2. Furry Scurry 5k Trail run. This race raises money to help support the local animal shelter. My wife and I have already registered.
3. Canoe the Slave canal. I have been talking to a coworker about taking my wife and I on a canoe trip through the slave canal. It is a passage that was built to merge the Wacissa River to the Aucilla River.
4. Start a beach volleyball day. I have been talking to another coworker about having a day where we play Beach Volleyball. I am going to try to make it on Monday’s.
Is there an thing you would like to do or have accomplished this spring?

Well I did a little work this last week, but not as much as I would have wanted. Since I was playing in the Fudpuckers Beach Volleyball , I wanted to take it easy and not be tired the day of the event. I had a good time at the volleyball tournament. I played with a few guys from Baton Rogue. Although we did not win a game we were competitive. It was the first time I have played in a beach tournament. I will say that jumping out of sand and jumping off a hard court are total two different play styles. I felt so sluggish in the sand.
I have a bad sunburn right now.
Although the guys I played with were really cool and I appreciate the opportunity to be on their team, I really wish I could have formed my own team of people I know. It was such a party atmosphere there on the beach, that it made us want our friends to come down to Fort Walton Beach and enjoy the fun.
The hotel we stayed in was the BOMB!! My wife and I stayed at Destin West . It was a suite with one bedroom, one nook that had bunk beds, and a sofa the pulled turned into a bed. It also had two baths, Washer and dryer and a full kitchen. It over looked the pool and the bay. The pool area had 2 hot tubs, a few pools and a lazy river that went around the entire thing. Awesome hotel!
So, if you are reading this I want to let you know that I the beach tournament happens twice a year. There will be another one sometime in September. We are planning to get people together and play in this tournament. It will be fun.
With the tragic events of this week, I wanted do a list of things that remind people of the good in the world. There are so many bad things that we see on the news everyday, it is very easy for people to forget what makes us smile. Here are a few things that I make me happy.
1. My wife: She is so good to me. There is nothing that makes me more than being with my wife. I love her so much
2. Pets: I love my dog Tia and my cat Loki. There bring so much joy to my heart. Every morning I wake up hang my feet off the bed and Loki starts to purr at my feet. When I return from work I open the door to the garage and Tia comes around the corner with her tail wagging
3. Christmas: I know that Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ and for that reason alone I am happy. I also know that I still wake up at 6:00 AM and run to the Christmas tree to open presents.
4. Movies: I love to go sit in and watch a good movie. For 2 hours I forget all my problems and just focus on the movie.
5. The 4th of July: I love Fireworks. I do not like fighting for a spot on at Tom Brown Park, but it worth it once you see the sky light up.
6. Sunday brunch with my mom: On Sundays after church my wife and I eat brunch with my mom. This is just a simple thing, but it means a lot to me.
These are just a few things that make me happy and put a smile on my face. I hope that you can think of things that make you happy. Please fell free to share them if you want.
Well I don’t know exactly what to say about yesterday’s shooting at Virginia Tech. I know that my heart heavy with sorrow.
I can not fathom the loss that has taken place. I have friends that are in Graduate school at VT. They are safe. I pray for all the families and friends of this tragedy that they may find some kind of peace within all this chaos.
Well another week as gone by and I am still trying my best to lose a little weight. I will have to admit that it is getting a little harder to get out and run. I think that it’s more mental that physical. I have been feeling it a little in my knees, but my mind is trying to tell me that I need to take it easy and have another slice of pizza. I ran in the Palace Saloon 5k this weekend. It was the first time I have ever run this race. I really enjoyed it. Unlike most 5k that starts and finish in the same place this race starts at Messer Field and finishes at the Palace Saloon.
I ran the race 10 sec (28:23) quicker than I ran the Lee’s Place 5k the week before. I was happy that I made it less than 30 minutes. I was very happy that my wife ran much faster that her Lee’s Place time. She cut 3 minutes and 36 seconds off of her time finishing in 0:32:31.
Oh yeah this race was just another great event put on by the GWTC
Waist: 38
Things that I need to improve. We all know that there are things in our life that you just need or want to do better. I thought I would list a few of the things in my life that I know I want to improve.
1. Understanding of God: I feel that I can always learn more about the God. I KNOW, I should read my bible more! I have gone to church most all my life and sometimes I still feel that I have not even comprehended 1% of what Christianity has to teach me.
2. Organization: I am one of those people that 99% of the world would call unorganized. If you look at my office you will see that what I mean. The odd thing is that I love lists, schedules, and tidiness. I just do not like creating them or cleaning.
3. Communication: I think most people can work on this aspect of their lives. I would like to be a better communicator to my beautiful wife and my family. Sometime I can not express the proper words, so I say nothing at all.
4. Focus: I need to start and finish things. College is a good example. I know that I can do anything asked of me, but I often lose focus. I need to work on finishing a project with the same enthusiasm level as I started.
5. Work Ethic: I do not think that I am a bad employee. I do think that I can improve at work.
6. Health: This is another aspect of my life that I need improve. I have started trying to live healthier life. It is a hard change for me because I love being active, but I love to eat copious amounts of fatty foods too.
These are just a couple of thing that I feel I need to improve in my life. Is there anything that you think you should improve?
I am not sure if anyone has notice this but Google has released a new phone 411 service named GOOG 411. Instead of calling 411 and getting charge (fill in 411 Service charge here), you can call 1-800-GOOG-411 (1-800-466-4411) and get an automated service (you will never get a human) that will give you business listing for FREE! GOOG 411 will even text the information to your phone. I have tried the service and it appeared to work properly.
I called the phone number and received the standard,
Goog 411 – “Calls recorded for quality”
Goog 411 – “Goog 411 experimental”
Goog 411 – “What City and State?”
Me – “Tallahassee, Florida”
Goog 411 – “Tallahassee, Florida” – The computerized voice repeats my statement to verify to me it has understood my command.
Goog 411 – “Barnaby’s on Apalachee Parkway, I will connect you or say details or say back” – Here I took no action and the computer connected me to the restaurant.
If I was to have said, “Details” I would have been given the phone, address, and the option to have the information text to my phone. I think this is a pretty good service and I bet Google will build more functionality to it in the future. I can see were you can call this service and have them text the information to your phone. Then with the new GPS technology and Google maps you will be able to get turn by turn directions to your destination.
Well I do not have much to say I did get some running in this week and I hope that I was able to keep my previous stats. I did eat a lot of food this past week, so I am a little disappointed with myself. My wife, my mom, and I ran in the 5th annual Lee’s Place 5k this weekend. It was bitter cold and pretty windy. I am happy with my results. I ran the race in 28:37 and did not stop once! Although the time is not great I was happy that I did not stop and walk any on the run. I hope that I can ratchet up my running this week. I will be running in the 33rd annual Palace Saloon 5k this coming weekend. I encourage all 7 people that read this blog to signup and run. If you have any question about the race you can look at the Gulf Winds Track Club website for more details.
