Randy Paucsh, The Last Lecture

Posted by verticalgambit on March 12, 2008

At my weekly small group last night I was told about a Carnegie Mellon professor named Randy Paucsh. He was diagnosis with pancreatic cancer last year. He was given 3 to 6 months to live. As tradition at Carnegie Mellon if a professor is leaving the university he is allowed to teach on any topic he wants for his last class. Professor Pausch selected to do his lecture on life lessons he learned.  You can watch his video here.

I have been told that this was a big story with most of the major media, so I am somewhat surprised that I missed his story until now. As of March 8, 2008, I just wanted to let everyone know Professor Pausch is still alive and kicking. He was admitted into the hospital that day to drain some fluid from around his lungs, but it appears his health is stable for the most part.

I guess this is a story has struck a cord with me because I have lost so much from cancer.

I hope that when you go home tonight you would pray, call, hug, kiss, cry, laugh, and love any family member you can contact. We should remember that everyday is precious and not forget those whom we hold dear.

To follow the story of Professor Pausch you can read his blog here.

God Bless you all

Weekly update 3/10/08

Posted by verticalgambit on March 10, 2008

So this is the second week I will be reporting in on my fitness goals.

My current weight is 242 lbs (as of 3/9/08) down 4 lbs from last week.

Good News

I was able to get an out some this week. I took my dog (Tia) on a 3 mile walk on Thursday. The wife and I took our dog on a 3 mile walk on Saturday and I was able to play about 3 hours of beach volleyball yesterday.

Bad News

Last week I mentioned that I was feeling sick, well I ended up getting a head cold that I have yet to shake. It pretty much keep me in bed most of the time. Even when I was able to walk the dog, I had to take a shower afterwards and enter in to a 2 hour coma to get my strength back. I think the 4 lbs I lost was because of the sickness squashing my appetite.

This Week

I hope I can get some exercise in this week. The weather is supposed be pretty good all week long. I am hoping I can some track work and stadium running a couple afternoons this week at Leon High school.  I also hope that I can find a few caches this week. We loaned our GPS to my mother-in-law, so I have not had it for over a week.

Misc

We had some bad storms come through and spawn tornadoes on my side of town this week. Although we are fine, our yard took some collateral damage in the form of a blown down tree. Sometime time this week I have to slice and dice it up and get it to the street to be taken away.

The guy from Erbert’s and Gerbert’s Clubs and Subs are celebrating their 20 year anniversary and decided to make a what might be the world’s biggest Vortex Cannon.

Interview a podcaster episode 1

Posted by verticalgambit on March 6, 2008

The following is a questionnaire that gave to my friend Steve, a local podcaster and host of

I plan on making this type of interview a recurring theme on my blog. Please if you have a chance take a listen.

Interview a Podcaster

Please answer the questions as truthful as possible.

Questions

  1. What is the name of your podcast?

Horseshoes & Hand Grenades

  1. How long have you been doing show?

We have been doing the show for 48 weeks. We do a weekly show, so this adds up to 48 episodes.

  1. What is the main topic of your podcast?

We cover odd news as well as an occasional story about someone doing something amazing, and all stories tend to have a weird twist to them.

  1. Do you have a website? If so what is it?

We do have a website, forum, and blog located at http://www.horseshoes-handgrenades.com

  1. How can we get your podcast?

Our podcast is available on iTunes, direct download from our website, and can be downloaded using other podcatchers (i.e. iPodder, Juice, Doppler) by using our RSS feed at http://feeds.feedburner.com/horseshoesandhandgrenades

  1. What is the main reason you started your podcast?

My co-host and I started the podcast because we loved talking about the craziest news we could find on the internet and decided that we wanted other people hear it too. I had been on several podcasts before this one and loved the format so I asked her if she would like to do one with me. We do this podcast mainly because it’s so fun and because we have made a lot of good friends through it over the last year.

  1. What is the best podcast episode you have done?

It’s hard to really pinpoint the best episode we’ve done because we have done so many good ones. I’d probably say that our live episodes are the best. Episode 40 was the most fun and actually had the most listener turnout for a live show. We had several call-ins and no technical problems. We also had excellent content and a great audience

  1. Best villain ever?

The Joker is totally the best villain ever. He’s a complete psychopath with no morals and is the complete antithesis of the hero of the story. A villain that reflects the exact opposite of everything the hero is is always the best villain.

  1. Skittles or M&M?

I’m a Skittles guy.

  1. Do you listen to podcast? If so what is your favorite?

I listen to several podcasts. Most of them are from the same group of guys at Revision3, an online media company. I love Diggnation and Tekzilla. Those are by far my favorites.

  1. Pirates or Ninja?

Definitely Pirates. A ninja may be able to sneak up on a pirate, but pirates are way to drunk to feel any pain, and they carry big guns. Plus they have way more charisma than ninjas and go on crazy awesome adventures.

I would like to thank Steve for taking some time to answer the questions.

Fitness Goals

Posted by verticalgambit on March 3, 2008

So this is the first week I will be reporting in on my fitness goals.

My current weight is 246 lbs (as of 3/2/08)

Good News

I had a productive week I played in two city league volleyball and basketball games (each on a different night). I went for a 4 mile walk on Saturday and a 3 mile on Sunday. Normally if I am walking I am Geocaching. I think my wife and I found 6 caches this week.

Bad News

My in-laws were in town and I ate way too much. Besides eating Italian and Japanese, we ate dessert after every lunch and dinner.  Also, I have been lucky enough not to have caught the flu this year, but I think my luck has run out. As I am typing here I feel like I may be getting sick. Hopefully if I am getting sick it is only a head cold.

This Week

I hope I can get some exercise in this week. The weather is supposed to be terrible tomorrow, but I might hit up the YMCA at lunch. I am hoping I can get a long walk on Thursday.

Misc

I was on the receiving end of two touring bicycles from my wife’s parents. I need to get them to the shop for some maintenance, but I hope to have them on the roads soon.

Edit: I changed my weight. I had 146lbs it should be 246lbs
